Swinburne partners with American entrepreneur Elon Musk
Tuesday 26 March 2019
Swinburne will partner with Elon Musk’s firm SpaceX in aim to further develop space tourism. Musk will be donating $300 million over the next three years, with the first space flight scheduled for February 2022.
Each space flight will cost less than $1,000 per person and will go for the duration of three hours. The unique propulsion system for the rocket has been developed by Swinburne and is the first of its kind. The rocket will be powered purely by solar power with no environmental impacts.
Space X led my Elon Musk, designs, manufactures and launches advanced rockets and spacecraft with its head office in California USA. In Musk’s endeavour to develop space tourism, he decided that Swinburne would be the perfect collective of students for the initiative.
“Swinburne’s students are the most creative and outcome focused I have met. I could not do this with any other university in the world” says Musk.
Swinburne students from all areas will be involved including PR students, to engineering and medical researchers. Although there are already numerous students onboard, volunteers for the first scheduled flights in February 2022 are still needed.
Swinburne University of Technology has always prided itself in innovation and its cutting-edge facilities and industry links but this opportunity to work with Musk has already created a lot of hype. Swinburne’s vice-chancellor Professor Linda Kristjanson was overwhelmingly positive about the initiative and believes that the recognition is due for the ‘Global leading’ university.
